The collection consists of organizational files pertaining to the operation of the military project and large subject files on various issues pertaining to women in the military. The subject files includes articles, reports and news clippings arranged by topic. Also included is a significant group of materials pertaining the the Department Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) These files were compiled in part by one of the WEAL staff members of the Women in the Military Project, the Honorable Carolyn Becraft.

WEAL was founded in 1968 by a group of professional women, mostly lawyers, in Cleveland, Ohio, who originally hoped to begin a NOW (National Organization for Women) chapter. Realizing NOW's agenda would not garner widespread support in Cleveland, they began their own group and limited their concerns to education, legislation, and the economic rights of women.
